Apple’s buyback program for old iPhone, iPad, Macs

Apple has enhanced its recycling program to add a new “reuse” option that pays owners of existing iPhones, iPads, Mac or PC desktop or notebook computers a fair market value for their old equipment, paid via an Apple Gift Card.

If the user chooses not to accept the final value, it will be returned at no charge. Otherwise, PowerOn will arrange to credit the user via an Apple Gift Card within three weeks of receipt. The company also securely erases all data remaining on the devices while preparing them for resale.

PowerOn’s estimated value of a functional, first generation iPad in very good condition is $165, for example. Users may likely be able to find their own second hand buyer for relatively new products in good condition, and fetch a higher price.

However, for older devices with some damage or dysfunctional features, the reuse option may provide an easier, more convenient option that still recoups some value they can then reinvest in new Apple gear.

Apple iMac for Educational Institutions just $999

Apple has launched a lower cost $999 iMac for educational institutions this morning. The new model is labeled “Education only” and is not available for individuals.

• 3.1GHz Intel Core i3 Dual-Core
• 21.5-inch LCD
• AMD Radeon HD 6750 with 256MB
• 2GB RAM
• 250GB Hard Drive
• SuperDrive
• OS X Lion

This new iMac does not have Thunderbolt, just a mini Display Port

The introduction of the new iMac shows that Apple is still keen on attracting education customers, which is a great way of getting its product in the hands of students, one of its core demographics.

Android Malware Has Increased

Lookout, a company that offers security services for a number of smartphones, is releasing the results of its Mobile Threat Report. The report is based on threat and security data from Lookout’s Mobile Threat Network, which includes data collected from more than 700 thousand apps and 10 million devices worldwide. Lookout’s main finding is that mobile malware has increased significantly, with Android users two-and-a-half times as likely to encounter malware today than just six months ago. Lookout estimates that between a half million and one million users were affected by mobile malware in the first half of 2011.

iCloud.com Beta First Look

Apple launched its iCloud.com beta tonight. The beta is intended for developers to test their iCloud syncing functionality. iCloud is Apple’s upcoming syncing and storage service for both iOS 5 and OS X Lion. iCloud (the service) stores your music, photos, apps, calendars, documents and keeps it in sync across multiple devices.

iCloud.com (the website) represents Apple’s MobileMe website replacement that gives users online access to their Calendar, Email, Address Book, Find My Phone and iWork data. The entire interface borrows heavily from iOS and Lion and incorporates many nice graphical flourishes and animations.

Apple has also revealed the pricing for additional iCloud storage. Apple has promised that iCloud will launch this fall alongside iOS 5. OS X Lion will also need an update to fully support iCloud.

First Windows Phone 7 ‘Mango’ handsets coming soon

The first smartphone based on the new “Mango” edition of Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform was unveiled on Wednesday in Tokyo.

The phone is the first of several handsets due over the next few months, that Microsoft hopes will signal its return to the smartphone market as a serious player.

Acer, ZTE And Fujitsu Toshiba have also recently shown off Mango phones that are expected to arrive this fall. For instance, the report notes that Fujitsu Toshiba is working with Japanese carrier KDDI to bring to market the IS12T, which features a “Qualcomm MSM 8655 processor, 3.7-inch touch screen and 13.2-megapixel camera.”

Insiders noted that HTC is expected to release “a number of Mango phones, powered by Qualcomm 1.5GHz single-core CPUs with display sizes ranging from 3.8- to 4.7-inch.”

Meanwhile, Nokia, arguably the vendor most committed to Windows Phone 7, will reportedly unveil its first batch of Mango devices at Nokia World 2011 in October. According to the report, sources implied that the Finnish handset maker’s strategy may be to release its first Windows Phone 7 handsets “at a time when fellow vendors have already heated up the market for Mango phones.”

BlackBerry Messenger 6 Launched with new features

(RIM), has recently launched their new version of BlackBerry Messenger, BBM 6, making it a full time social experience. these services will be officially released with OS 6. However, people can still download BBM 6 at the official BlackBerry site. The new messenger will be equipped with a number of features including social gaming and applications. It will allow users to users to create apps using the BlackBerry app world, as well as socialize with one another using the same applications

The new messenger will also allow users to interact with one another while gaming. Users can also view apps listed on their friends’ phone. To make things easier, BBM 6 will allow users to set a specific colour icon for each contact, so that they can identify their contact just by the colour assigned to them
